When Wiltshire only had Two Churches: A Golden Age?
This intriguing title was chosen by the Bishop of Salisbury, when he delivered the inaugural lecture following the first AGM of the Friends of Wiltshire Churches. This group has been formed to raise the awareness and some funds for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. We exist to make grants towards the repair and improvement of churches and chapels, of any denomination within Wiltshire.
The Bishop used a rich treasure of slides from churches and cathedrals from across the globe, and illuminated our understanding of how and why and where the generations have designed and built churches to glorify God, and offer praise for all his blessings, and to explore the many questions that the human condition raises for us all.
Of course, we were left with the question within
ourselves about which two churches might have been a golden age for the county: Saxon/Roman; Roman/Celtic; Romanesque/Gothic; Saints on Earth/Saints in Heaven; South of the Plain/North of the Plain, etc, etc. But a fascinating journey through time and geography which captured us all.
